Best academic high school

It has been stated by some that St. Paul is a Private School, operated by Public Funds.

Saint Paul likes to select the best academic students from Russell county to improve their standards. The fact that they pick and choose who they allow to attend their school allows them to function like a private school but the tax payers of Wise county pays the bill.

Actually Indian Dad, I think it has been quite a few years since St. Paul has won the PACE competition. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

If you want your kids to have more academic AND athletic opportunities, the only smart move is to take them towards the tri-cities. However, the closest you can get w/o getting totally immersed in the larger schools over there is Abingdon. It's the best of everything. You'll have good athletes to compete with/against, and they get all sorts of opportunities for anything they want academically, no matter if it's arts based, science based, literature based, or anything else. The money's there in town to support both greatly and to provide kids with opportunities they just can't get elsewhere, especially in Wise or Dickenson County.

I basically lived in Abingdon for almost a year when I was working over there, and it's a whole new world when it comes to HS athletic & academic opportunities. That'd be my pick for you and yours, just my personal opinion.

It depends on what area you are talking about. In SWVA I would choose Abingdon High School. Abingdon has won several Wachovia Cup Awards, their use of technology is superior to a lot of schools in this area, and it's big enough that your child would get good social experiences as well. A majority of the high schools in Wise, Scott, Dickenson, etc. are so small that they don't really prepare students for entering the larger colleges because their students have always had that big fish in a small pond experience and most get overwhelmed when they are away from home.

[/ QUOTE ] That cup is based everything- sports, drama, sportsmanship- the whole nine yards. Washington County schools didn't set the world afire in the sols ,either.

Sorry seldom scene but there are two Wachovia Cups- one for academics and one for athletics. I believe Widespread was referring to the fact that Abingdon has won the academic version of the cup several times. For the 2005-2006 year they were second behind Charlottesville.
